What to expect

The process is simple.

  1. To find the right therapist for you, view our therapists’ bios here.

  2. Schedule your intake session. If you’re not quite ready to book yet, you can set up a complimentary 15-minute consultation.

  3. Attend your intake. During your first session, your therapist will ask questions about your history, life, and your goals for therapy.

  4. Start therapy. Our clients see us anywhere between three and twelve months. We’ll get to the root of what’s causing your anxiety and find ways to manage it together.

Anxiety therapy FAQs

Although many of us are anxious (about 40 million, to be exact), the word “anxiety” is often misunderstood. Here, our therapists for anxiety in Annapolis answer a few common questions about anxiety and anxiety therapy.

Am I just stressed out or actually anxious?

Stress, worry, and anxiety often feel the same, but they’re clinically different.


Stress is your response to something external, like relationship problems or issues at work. Anxiety, on the other hand, is defined by persistent, excessive worries that don’t go away even in the absence of a stressor.


Whereas everybody worries from time to time, anxiety becomes excessive, persistent, and debilitating. It can get in the way of your daily functioning, and often results in avoidance of anxiety-provoking triggers. While worry resides in the mind, anxiety is a full mind-body experience with physical symptoms.

Why am I anxious?

There are many different causes of anxiety, such as:

 

  1. Trauma. People who have endured or witnessed traumatic events are at higher risk of developing anxiety disorder at some point in life. 

  2. Stress build-up. Big events and life transitions, or a collection of smaller events and life changes, can trigger anxiety.

  3. Genetics. Anxiety is more common in people whose blood relatives also have this condition.

  4. Your personality. People who are prone to anxiety tend to struggle with perfectionism, an excessive need for approval, and/or an excessive need for control. People who ignore physical and psychological signs of stress are more likely to develop anxiety.

 

And more. These causes often interact with each other. Your anxiety can be increased by things like lifestyle choices and other mental health conditions.
