Adolescent Counseling

Online therapy or in-person therapy at our Annapolis, Maryland office

The teenage years are notoriously difficult.

Cedar Counseling & Wellness has specialized mental health therapists for teens. Our goal is to offer your teen the skills and support they need to navigate these years effectively.

Why do teens come to therapy?

Teenagers come to therapy for a variety of reasons, but we commonly see struggles with:

  • Depression: feeling down, sad, empty, or hopeless

  • Anxiety: worry that has become excessive and is getting in the way of daily functioning

  • Low self-esteem

  • Family Counseling

  • Social Anxiety

  • Life changes: divorce, moving, etc.

  • Grief: loss of a loved one

  • Trauma

  • Suicidal thoughts

  • Self-harm

  • Relationship therapy

How can teen therapy help?

  • Adolescent counseling provides a safe place where teens can talk about what’s going on without fear of judgment.

  • Therapy for teens can help teach social skills and help them learn to embrace themselves.

  • Teen counseling can help teens learn tools, skills, and techniques to manage anxiety and depression, stress, and overwhelm.

  • Teen counseling can help teens become more confident in who they are.

  • Adolescent family therapy can help teens build better relationships with family

  • Group therapy for teens can improve social skills and relationships with friends, and significant others.

  • Adolescent counseling can teach teens effective communication skills.

  • Counseling for teenagers can increase their self-awareness by exploring who they are (strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes, etc.)

What will the first session be like?

The first session will be all about getting to know you. You’ll tell your therapist about yourself, what brings you into therapy, and what goals you have for therapy. Your therapist will probably ask some questions to help gather information. You’ll create a treatment plan with your therapist, which we’ll use in our future sessions together!

This session is really an opportunity for you to interview the therapist, to make sure they’re a good fit for you! Do you feel like you can trust them and open up to them? That will be a key ingredient in the therapeutic process.

What happens after the first session?

After that first session, the real work begins!

Every session provides an opportunity for you to talk about what is going on in your life, discuss any issues you’ve been facing, and develop a skill-set for facing the challenges you’re going through.

Some common skills that are learned in teen therapy include:

  • Mindfulness: developing an awareness of your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations without judgment. Learning to focus on the present moment.

  • Identifying and addressing the thoughts that are holding you back or hurting you.

  • Deep relaxation techniques for calming your mind and body down when you’re anxious, upset, or overwhelmed.

  • Basic self-care techniques.

  • Assertive communication skills.
